PACHAMAMA – the Earth Goddess
Pachamama is a central spiritual and cultural figure in the Andean region of South America. She is said to be the mother of Inti the sun god and Mama Killa the moon goddess.
She represents the connection between nature and the importance of living in harmony. She embodies the Earth – a living being, a nurturing and protective mother who provides sustenance and blessings. She is Earth Mother and inspires community, environmental awareness and a deep respect for the natural world. She can bring earthquakes, drought and poor harvests to those who do not please her but can be placated with gifts of coca leaves, silver, food, candles and traditional alcoholic drinks.
Here, she is based on Nemonte Nenquimo, a Waorani woman and campaigner who fights to protect the Amazon rainforestin Ecuador. She and her people filed a lawsuit against the Government when they threatened to auction off their land to oil companies. They now protect 500,000 acres of rainforest and Nenquimo demands national respect for indigenous communities and their ownership of the land. She is a founding member the indigenous Ceibo Alliance.
